The Hon. Michael J. Barrasse is a judge for the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench on November 2, 1999.
Prior to his appointment, Barrasse was the District Attorney for the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was elected in 1990.
Barrasse earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Scranton. He then completed a J.D. at Penn State Dickinson Law in 1981.
After graduating from law school, Barrasse joined the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney. He then transferred to Philadelphia County District Attorney’s Office, where he served for several years before returning to Lackawanna County.
He also worked as an assistant district attorney for the Philadelphia County District Attorney’s Office.
His memberships have included the Board of Directors of the National District Attorneys Association, the Board of Drug and Alcohol Treatment Service, the Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission Advisory Committee on Addiction Treatment Services. He also founded the Children’s Advocacy Center of NEPA, an organization that has helped children and adolescents who are victims of child abuse and neglect.
He is a recipient of the Award for Efficient Caseload Management from the Pennsylvania Trial Judges, the Public Service Award from the Pennsylvania Psychological Association (2006), the Public Service Award from the Women’s Resource Center, and the Pennsylvania Public Servant of the Year Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (2016).
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Barrasse attended Scranton Preparatory High School. He is the son of a sales representative for BASF Chemical Company. His mother and his father eventually opened a Culligan Water Systems franchise in Clarks Summit. He was married to Dr. Linda Barrasse, a Scranton cardiologist. They shared two children, one of whom passed away in a pedestrian accident in Pittsburgh.
He is registered as a Republican.
