Biography

The Hon. Michael D. Wentzell is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Minnesota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mark Dayton on January 31, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Philip T. Kanning.


The First Judicial District includes Carver County, Dakota County, Goodhue County, Le Sueur County, Scott County, and Sibley County.


Prior to his appointment, Wentzell served with the Carver County Attorney’s Office. He started as an assistant county attorney, rising through the ranks to become chief deputy county attorney.


Wentzell earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Concordia College. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Minnesota Law School.


After graduating from law school, Wentzell entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Collins, Buckley, Sauntry & Haugh.


His memberships have included the Eighth District Bar Association. He has also been involved with the Chaska Rotary Club.
