Hon. Max Covil is a judge for the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey in September 2020.
He has held an assignment in the Family Court.
Prior to his appointment, Covil was a commissioner of the Maricopa County Superior Court (2018 to 2020) and served for five years as an administrative law judge with the Arizona Department of Transportation (2013 to 2018). During his tenure as a commissioner, he was assigned to the high-volume felony court, the Regional Court Center. As an administrative judge, Covil presided over hearings involving issues under the regulatory and enforcement powers of ADOT.
He also spent time as a judge pro tem of the Superior Court (2013 to 2018). As such, he held assignments in the Regional Court Center and Probation Violation Court.
Before that, Covil was a deputy public defender in the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office (2007 to 2013).
He received a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. Covil went on to complete a J.D. at Syracuse University College of Law in 2007.
His memberships have included the Arizona Black Bar Association, the Arizona Judges Association, the Maricopa County Bar Association, Community Legal Services (Board of Directors), and the Thurgood Marshall Inn of Court.
Covil has served as a volunteer for the Arizona Veterans StandDown Alliance, adjudicating criminal cases for veterans. He also spent time as a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of North Tempe.
