Hon. Matthew J. Wilson is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of New Mexico in Santa Fe County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Susana Martinez in 2013, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Stephen Pfeffer (Ret.).
The 1st Judicial District includes Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Los Alamos Counties. While on the bench, Wilson has held assignments in the Family Court and Civil Court.
Prior to his appointment, he was a hearing officer for the 1st Judicial District Court. Before that, Wilson worked as a special assistant attorney general for eight years with the New Mexico Child Support Enforcement Division in Santa Fe and was a prosecutor for the 12th Judicial District in Alamogordo. He also spent three years as a prosecutor in Florida before relocating to New Mexico in 2000.
Wison received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He went on to complete a J.D. at Stetson University College of Law in 1996. Wilson was admitted to practice in Florida (1997) and New Mexico (2000).
His civic involvement has included the New Mexico Library Foundation.
Wilson was raised in Los Angeles, California. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys woodworking, including making furniture. Wilson and his wife, Stephanie, have one son.
He is registered as a Democrat.
