The Hon. Matthew W. McFarland is a judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He was nominated to the bench by President Donald J. Trump on January 23, 2019, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Thomas M. Rose. The United States Senate confirmed his appointment on December 18, 2019.
Prior to his nomination, McFarland was a judge for the Ohio Fourth District Court of Appeals, a position to which he was elected in 2004. During that time, he is credited with handing down thousands of opinions and panel votes, serving as the presiding and administrative judge of the Fourth District, and sitting as a visiting judge at the Supreme Court of Ohio. McFarland also received an appointment by the Ohio Chief Justice to serve as a commissioner on the Board of Grievances and Discipline and the Advisory Committee on Court Security and Emergency. He began his judicial career as a magistrate for the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas in 1999, where he served in the Juvenile Division.
Before joining the bench, McFarland spent four years managing his own solo practice in Portsmouth (1995 to 1999). He supplemented his practice with service as special counsel to the Ohio attorney general (1995 to 1999) and as an assistant prosecutor in Scioto County (1995 to 1999). McFarland was also a former assistant prosecutor in Licking County (1994 to 1995).
He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Capital University in 1989. McFarland then completed a J.D. at Capital University Law School in 1992.
After graduating from law school, he began in legal career in private practice in both Columbus (1992 ) and Wheelersburg (1992 to 1994). During that same time, McFarland served as an assistant city solicitor for Portsmouth (1992 to 1993).
He has taught as an adjunct professor at Capital University and at Shawnee State University.
McFarland was born in Portsmouth, Ohio.
