Biography

The Hon. Martha M. Simonett (Ret.) served as a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Minnesota. Simonett was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arne Carlson on June 24, 1996. She retired on June 4, 2019, and became a senior judge for the State of Minnesota.


The First Judicial District includes Carver County, Dakota County, Goodhue County, Le Sueur County, Scott County, and Sibley County.


Simonett earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Minnesota in 1979. She then completed a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law in 1984.


After graduating from law school, Simonett entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Rider, Bennett, Egan & Arundel. She stayed with the firm until his appointment to the bench.


Her memberships have included the Minnesota District Judges Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association. She has also been involved with the Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Review Board, the Minnesota Jury Reform Task Force, the Dakota County Community Corrections Board, and the Supreme Court Advisory Committee.
