Biography

The Hon. Mark J. Dinsmore is a magistrate for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. He was appointed to the bench by the judges of the Southern District of Indiana on December 17, 2010, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Jane E. Magnus-Stinson.


Prior to his appointment, Dinsmore had worked in private practice since 1996. During that time, he was an attorney at Barnes & Thornburg LLP in Indianapolis, where his practice focused on complex commercial disputes and construction litigation matters. Dinsmore also chaired the firm’s Litigation Department Technology Committee, and he represented clients in international and domestic arbitrations, including representing the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in an international arbitration involving the Dayton Accords that ended the Balkan war.


He received a bachelor's degree in economics from Wabash College in 1983. Dinsmore then completed a J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law. While a law student, he sat as lead articles editor of the Law Review.


After graduating from law school, Dinsmore began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. John Daniel Tinder with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.


Before pursuing his legal career, he served as a captain in the United States Army, including a deployment to the Republic of Korea.
