The Hon. Mark Gibbons (Ret.) was a justice of the Supreme Court of Nevada. He was elected to the seat in 2002 and was retained in subsequent elections. He retired from the bench in 2020. At the time, Gibbons held the distinction of being the longest-serving member of the Supreme Court of Nevada.
Gibbons received a B.A. from the University of California, Irvine in 1972. He went on to earn a J.D. from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles in 1975.
After law school, he entered into private practice. Gibbons first practiced as an associate at Woofter & Bilbray (1975 to 1976) before becoming a shareholder at Bilbray & Gibbons in 1976. He remained in that capacity until becoming a shareholder at Gibbons & Breman in 1985. He was also a shareholder at Oshins & Gibbons (1990 to 1995) and later worked as of counsel at Streich Lang (1995 to 1997). While in private practice, he specialized in real estate-related litigation.
Gibbons began his judicial career in 1997 when he joined the Eighth Judicial District Court. During his tenure on the District Court bench, he served as the presiding judge of the Civil Division (1998) and was the District Court’s chief judge for one year beginning in 2001.
After his election to the Supreme Court, Gibbons served as its chief judge in 2008, 2014, and 2019.
He served as chair of the Jury Improvement Implementation Committee, which helped implement recommendations of the Jury Improvement Commission. He also chaired the Information Technology Steering Committee and was a co-chair of the Specialty Court Funding Committee and the Foreclosure Mediation Rules Committee.
His other memberships included the Nevada Bar Association, the Clark County Bar Association, the Washoe County Bar Association, and the board of trustees of the Clark County Law Library.
Gibbons received the Judicial Excellence Award from the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada in 2020.
His brother, the Hon. Michael Gibbons is a judge for the Nevada Court of Appeals.
