Biography

The Hon. Mark C. Vandelist is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Minnesota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mark Dayton on January 13, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Edward I. Lynch.


The First Judicial District includes Carver County, Dakota County, Goodhue County, Le Sueur County, Scott County, and Sibley County.


Prior to his appointment, Vandelist was a partner at Vandelist & Vandelist, a law firm he joined in 1996. Before that, he spent time as a partner at Heuer & Vandelist (1992 to 1996) as well as a trial attorney at Cousineau McGuire Chartered (1989 to 1992).


Vandelist earned a bachelor’s degree from American University in 1980. He then completed a J.D. at Hamline University School of Law in 1983.


After graduating from law school, Vandelist began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Donald Alsop of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. He served in that capacity until 1984, at which time he entered into private practice at Thomas Lyons & Associates. Then, in 1985, he joined Tom Alberts & Associates, where he practiced for the next four years.


His memberships have included the American Arbitration Association, the American Bar Association, the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association, the Dakota County Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and the Minnesota Certified Civil Trial Lawyers Association.


Born in Wisconsin, Vandelist is a resident of Lakeville, Minnesota. He has been involved with the Park Avenue United Methodist Church and the Northern Pines United Methodist Camp.
