Biography

The Hon. Lia N. Stuhlsatz is an associate justice for the Rhode Island Family Court. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gina Raimondo on June 29, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Francis J. Murray, Jr.


Prior to her appointment, Stuhlsatz was a staff attorney for Rhode Island Legal Services, a position she held since 1999. During her tenure there, she sat as the supervisor of the Family Preservation Unit.


Stuhlsatz earned a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She spent the next few years teaching social studies in New York City before completing a J.D. at the City University of New York School of Law.


After graduating from law school, Stuhlsatz began her legal career as a staff attorney in the New Hampshire Public Defender Program. She also spent time as a social worker and a legal advocate for the Incarcerated Mothers Program through Edwin Gould Services for Children & Families and Catholic Charities.


A resident of Rumford, Rhode Island, Stuhlsatz attended Monadnock Regional High School.
