The Hon. Leonard J. Torrealba is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Gavin Newsom on August 28, 2020, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Edward A. Ferns.
Prior to his appointment, Torrealba served as a deputy district attorney in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office since 1986. During his tenure there, he was the Deputy-in-Charge of the Notario Fraud Unit. His other assignments included the Public Integrity Division, the Healthcare Fraud Division, the Major Narcotics Division, and the Consumer Protection Division.
Torrealba earned a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1982. He then completed a J.D. at The George Washington University Law School in 1985.
He has served as president of the Latino Prosecutors Association and the Latino Prosecutors Foundation. He has also been a Trustee for the Mexican American Bar Foundation.
Torrealba has taught Advanced Criminal Procedure as an adjunct professor of law at Southwestern Law School.
Born and raised in Venezuela, Torrealba moved to Los Angeles when he was seventeen years old.
He is registered as a Democrat.
