Biography

The Hon. Leon Schydlower is a judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. He was nominated to the bench by former President Joe Biden on February 7, 2024, filling the vacancy created by Hon. Frank Montalvo. The United States Senate confirmed his nomination on March 22, 2024.


Prior to his nomination, Schydlower sat for nine years as a magistrate for the Western District of Texas (2015 to 2024). Before joining the bench, he was in private practice in El Paso since 2000. During that time, Schydlower spent two years as an attorney at Kemp Smith, P.C. (2000 to 2002).


Schydlower received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in 1993. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Texas School of Law in 1995.


Schydlower has served as a member of the United States Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps since 1996. Early on, he was a lieutenant and an assistant staff judge advocate with the United States Navy Legal Service Office Pacific in Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i (1996 to 1997), and later served for one year as a military prosecutor. Schydlower eventually transitioned into the Navy Reserve and the Air Force Reserve. lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve, he has held assignments at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, and Misawa Air Base, Japan. Schydlower was also an instructor of law at the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General's School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.


In addition to his military service, he served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii (1998 to 2000).


Schydlower was born in Long Beach, California.
