The Hon. Kendra N. Briggs is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She was nominated to the bench by President Joe Biden in November 2021 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Hon. Judith Bartnoff. Briggs was confirmed by the United States Senate in December 2022.
Prior to her nomination, Briggs was an assistant United States attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia since 2010. During that time, she prosecuted civil rights, fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and narcotics cases. Briggs also served as the 5th District Community Prosecutor.
Before becoming a federal prosecutor, she was a staff attorney at Shook Hardy & Bacon, LLP (2008 to 2010) in Washington, D.C.; assistant general counsel for the Florida Department of Transportation (2006 to 2008); and a senior associate at Parks & Crump, LLC (2002 to 2006) in Tallahassee, Florida. Briggs began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Peggy A. Quince with the Florida Supreme Court.
She received an A.A. from Florida A&M University and a B.A. in criminology from Florida State University (1996). Briggs then completed a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 2002.
She is a founding member of the District Motherhued and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Briggs has also been involved with Jack and Jill of American, Inc. (D.C. Chapter) and the National Black Prosecutors Association.
She received the United States Attorney’s Award for Exceptional Performance in 2020.
Briggs was born in Miami, Florida.
