Judge Karoline Mehalchick: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Karoline Mehalchick is a judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. She was nominated to the bench by President Joe Biden on July 11, 2023, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. John E. Jones, III. The United States Senate confirmed her appointment on January 31, 2024.


While on the bench, Mehalcick is credited with helping to establish the Prisoner Litigation Settlement Program, and she has presided over the Scranton CARE Court, a reentry program created for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. She began her judicial career as a magistrate for the District in 2013. Mehalchick was named Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District in 2021, a post she held until her elevation to federal judge.


Prior to joining the bench, she was in private practice at Oliver, Price & Rhodes in Clarks Summit since 2002. Mehalchick began as an associate before being named a partner in the firm in 2008.


She received a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1998. Mehalchick then completed a J.D. at Tulane Law School in 2001.


After graduating from law school, she began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Trish Corbett with the Court of Common Pleas in Lackawanna County in 2001, where she remained until entering into private practice the following year.


Mehalchick is a past president of the Young Lawyers Division of the Lackawanna Bar Association and president-elect of the Federal Bar Association. She is also a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and its Commission on Women in the Profession.


She was named Woman Trailblazer by the Pennsylvania Bar Association in 2020.


Mehalchick was born in Berlin, Vermont, and attended Scranton High School in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Her father, George, worked as a private practice attorney in Scranton.
