Biography

Hon. Karin L. McCarthy is a judge for the 10th Judicial District Court of Minnesota in Anoka County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mark Dayton in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. B. William Ekstrum (Ret.).


The 10th Judicial District includes Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright Counties.


Prior to her appointment, her legal career included working as an assistant county attorney with the Washington County Attorney’s Office (2005 to 2018), a staff attorney at Tubman Family Alliance (2000 to 2004), an attorney for the Family Violence Network, and an associate at Caswell & Associates (1994 to 2000).


McCarthy also served as an adjunct professor at William Mitchell College of Law.


She received a B.A. in political science from the College of St. Catherine in 1991. McCarthy went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Minnesota Law School in 1994. She was admitted to practice in Minnesota in 1995.


McCarthy served as chair of the St. Croix Valley Chapter of the Minnesota Women Lawyers and a past president of the Cottage Grove Public Safety Board. She has also been involved with the St. Catherine University Alumna Council.


At the time of her appointment, McCarthy resided in Cottage Grove, Minnesota.
