Judge Justin F. Brotherton: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Justin F. Brotherton is a judge on the Jefferson County Family Court in the 5th Judicial District of New York. Brotherton was elected to the Family Court bench on November 5, 2024.


The 5th Judicial District includes Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.


Prior to his election, Brotherton operated a solo practice in Watertown, serving part of that time as a town justice in Brownville. He established his law firm in 2011, where his practice focused on family court and matrimonial law. Before that, Brotherton was an attorney at Carter, Ramseier & Holcombe in Clayton.


He completed a J.D. at Roger Williams University School of Law. He was admitted to practice in New York (2011).


Brotherton is a past president of the Jefferson County Bar Association and was appointed to the Attorney Grievance Committee for the 5th Judicial District. He has also served as a board member of the Disabled Persons Action Organization, the Community Action Planning Council, and Pivot (formerly the Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council).


Brotherton is a native of Jefferson County, New York, where he attended Carthage High School. He has resided in Brownville alongside his wife, Lindsey, and their three sons. In his free time, he has coached youth wrestling.


Brotherton is registered as a Republican.
