Biography

The Hon. Joseph F. De Vanon, Jr. (Ret.) served as a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. De Vanon began his judicial career as a judge for the Glendale Municipal Court in 1990. Six years later, he was elevated to the Superior Court by former Governor Pete Wilson in 1996.


De Vanon earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Southern California in 1972. He then completed a J.D. at Western State College of Law in 1976.


After graduating from law school, De Vanon began his legal career as a deputy public defender in the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office in 1977. Then,in 1986, he was named commissioner of the Glendale Municipal Court, a position he held until his appointment to the Municipal Court.


His memberships have included the California Judges Association and the California Court Commissioners Association. He was named Judge of the Year by the Pasadena Bar Association in 2006.


Born in Chicago, De Vanon was raised in Pasadena and San Marino.


He retired from the bench in 2013.
