Biography

The Hon. Jose E. Martinez is a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He was nominated to the bench by former President George W. Bush on January 23, 2002, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Edward B. Davis. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 13, 2002.


Prior to his appointment, Martinez spent thirty years as an attorney in private practice. During his tenure there, he performed a short stint as the regional director of the Office for Drug Abuse Law Enforcement of the United States Department of Justice (1972 to 1974). Before that, he was an assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of Florida (1968 to 1970).


Martinez earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami in 1962. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 1965.


After graduating from law school, Martinez began his legal career as a judge advocate with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Navy.


Born in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Martinez and his wife, Mitzi, raised two daughters.
