Biography

The Hon. Jonathan W. Feldman (Ret.) is a recalled magistrate for the United States District Court for the Western District of New York. He was appointed to the bench on November 6, 1995. Feldman retired on November 5, 2019.


Prior to his appointment, he served as a federal public defender with the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Western District of New York since 1992. Before that, Feldman was a founding partner alongside, Hon. Frank P. Geraci, Jr., at Geraci & Feldman in Rochester, having established the law firm in 1987. Feldman was also the founder of the United States Arbitration and Mediation of Upstate New York in 1988.


He received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1978. Feldman then completed a J.D. at Syracuse University College of Law in 1981. He was a member of the Order of the Coif and the National Moot Court Trial Team. A recipient of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy, Feldman also sat as managing editor of the Syracuse Law Review.


After working briefly as an associate at Harris Beach & Wilcox in Rochester, he became a confidential law clerk to the Hon. Michael Telesca with the United States District Court for the Western District of New York in 1982. The following year, Feldman began a four-year stint as an assistant United States attorney with the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York before returning to private practice in 1987.


He sat by appointment on the Magistrate Judge Education Committee of the Federal Judicial Center and served for several years as the center’s primary instructor, teaching federal criminal practice and procedure for new magistrates. Feldman was also an adjunct professor at Cornell Law School.


He was appointed by United States Chief Justice John Roberts to serve as the magistrate representative of the governing board of the Federal Judicial Center (2012) and as a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on Defender Services.
