Hon. Jonathan Svetkey is a judge for the Criminal Court of the City of New York in New York County. He was appointed to the Criminal Court by Mayor Bill de Blasio in January 2020. Svetkey was initially appointed to serve as an interim judge of the Civil Court by Mayor de Blasio in 2019 but was designated to the Criminal Court.
He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester. He went on to earn a J.D. from the Catholic University School of Law.
Prior to taking the bench, Svetkey had worked as an associate court attorney with the New York State Unified Court System in New York County.
Before joining the Unified Court System, he was a partner at a criminal defense law firm, where he specialized in immigration and personal injury matters.
He came to the private sector after working as an assistant district attorney with both the Kings County District Attorney’s Office as well as the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office.
