The Hon. Jonathan M. Apgar (Ret.) was a judge for the 23rd Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia. He was elected to the bench by the Virginia General Assembly in 1997. Apgar retired on April 1, 2013.
The 23rd Judicial Circuit includes the Cities of Roanoke and Salem and Roanoke County.
Prior to beginning his judicial career, he was in private practice and sat as a substitute judge for the 23rd Judicial District since 1986. Apgar was also an assistant commonwealth’s attorney and assistant public defender in Roanoke.
Apgar received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Richmond School of Law.
Outside of his legal practice, Apgar sings jazz on the weekends at a local restaurant in Roanoke and is a classic movie buff. He is also credited with producing an award-winning short film to raise awareness of Virginia’s drug courts.
