Biography

Hon. John P. McDonald is a judge for the Somerset/Hunterdon/Warren County Superior Court (Vicinage 13) in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench in 2017.


McDonald has held an assignment in the Family Division in Somerset County since joining the bench.


Prior to his appointment, he was a partner in the Somerville law firm of McDonald & Rogers, where he specialized in litigating criminal and civil matters. McDonald joined the firm in 1980.


He received a B.A. from Seton Hall University in 1976. McDonald went on to complete a J.D. at Seton Hall Law School in 1979.


His memberships have included the Somerset County Bar Association (past president), the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (past president), the American Bar Association, and the Seton Hall Law School Alumni American Inn of Court (Master).


McDonald also sat as a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee and the District XIII Ethics Committee.


He received the Somerset County Professional Lawyer of the Year Award from the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law and the Somerset County Bar Association in 2012.
