The Hon. John J. Briggs is a judge for the Weld County Court in Colorado. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bill Ritter on January 21, 2011.
Prior to his appointment, Briggs was an associate at the Law Office of Robert E. Ray, a position to which he was named in 2004. In that capacity, he specialized in criminal law, domestic relations, and appellate matters. Before that, he spent three years as a deputy state public defender for the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office.
Briggs earned a bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from Marietta College in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at Washburn University School of Law in 1993.
After graduating from law school, Briggs began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Central Research Staff of the Kansas Court of Appeals. He served in that capacity until 1996, at which time he became a public defender in Kansas.
His memberships have included the Board of Directors of the Weld Food Bank.
Born in New York, Briggs was raised in Leonia, New Jersey. He and his wife reside in Windsor, Colorado.
