The Hon. John C.V. Katsanos is a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in Queens County. He was elected to the bench in 2018.
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Katsanos received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1991. He went on to earn a J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law (1997) and an LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law (1999).
Over the course of his legal career, Katsanos worked in both private and government practice. He also served as a law clerk to the Hon. Nicholas Tsoucalas with the U.S. Court of International Trade (1998 to 2000) and to the Hon. Arthur J. Gonzalez with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York (2003 to 2005).
Judge Katsanos was born in Florence, South Carolina, shortly after his parents immigrated to the United States from Greece. He is married to Aravella Simotas, who serves as an assemblywoman with the New York State Assembly.
His memberships include the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Constitution Society, the Asian American Bar Association of New York, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Brandeis Association, the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County, the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York, the Muslim Bar Association of New York, the Queens County Bar Association, the Queens County Women’s Bar Association, and the South Asian and Indo-Caribbean Bar Association of Queens. He is also a board member of the Hellenic Lawyers Association.
