Hon. John C. Hoffman (Ret.) was a judge for the 10th Judicial District Court of Minnesota. He was appointed to the bench on September 16, 1997. Hoffman retired on October 8, 2021, and was subsequently assigned to serve as a statewide senior judge on March 1, 2022.
The 10th Judicial District includes Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright Counties.
During his judicial tenure, Hoffman served as Assistant Chief Judge (2008 to 2012) and Chief Judge (2012 to 2016) of the 10th Judicial District.
Prior to beginning his judicial career, he was a partner at Terpstra, Black, Brandell & Hoffman, having joined the firm in 1992. Before that, Hoffman served as the County Attorney in Mille Lacs, a position to which he was appointed in 1985. He was also a former partner at Hoffman & Hoffman (1982 to 1985).
Hoffman received a B.S. in business administration from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1977. He went on to complete a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law in 1982. While a law student, Hoffman completed clerkships with Hoke, Roehrdans, Bigelow & Chamberlain (1979 to 1980); Dorsey & Whitney (1980 to 1981); and Best & Flanagan (1981 to 1982).
His memberships included the Minnesota District Judges Association (past president), the Anoka County Bar Association, the Mill Lacs County Bar Association, the 18th District Bar Association, the Washington County Bar Association, the Minnesota County Attorneys Association, the National District Attorneys Association, the Minnesota District Judges Foundation (treasurer), and the Mille Lacs County Peace Officers Association.
Hoffman was chair of the Anoka County District Court Bench, the 10th Judicial District Child Support Magistrates, and the 10th Judicial District Labor/Management Committee.
From a civic standpoint, he served on the City of Princeton City Council, Economic Development Agency, Planning Commission, and Airport Commission. Hoffman was also involved with the Elk River Chamber of Commerce, People’s Bank of Commerce, the Princeton Public Schools, Trinity Episcopal Church of Elk River, the Rum River Golf Club Board, and the Princeton Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
He attended Princeton High School in Princeton, Minnesota.
