The Hon. John A. Canavan, III is an associate justice of the Boston Municipal Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mitt Romney in 2006.
Over the course of his judicial career, Canavan has held assignments as an associate justice of the Massachusetts District Court in Plymouth County.
Canavan earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1982. He then completed a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1985.
After graduating from law school, Canavan began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 1994, at which time he became a sole practitioner in his own private practice in Boston.
His memberships have included the Town of Winthrop Chamber of Commerce. He also sat as Chairman of the Winthrop School Committee (1992 to 1993).
