Hon. Jewel Scott is a judge for the Clayton County Superior Court in Georgia. She was elected to the bench in 2020 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Kathryn Powers (Ret.). Scott holds the distinction of being the first Jamaican American to be elected to the Superior Court in Clayton County.
Prior to her election, she had practiced as a partner in the Jonesboro law firm of Scott & Turner Law Group, LLC since 2008. The firm handled family law, criminal law, and civil litigation matters and specialized in public and community interest litigation.
Before entering into private practice, Scott spent time as an assistant district attorney with the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office, serving there as the first black female and first Jamaican American district attorney. During her tenure as a prosecutor, Scott was credited with initiating the Deferred Prosecution Program in Clayton County.
She also served as Georgia’s former Honorary Consul to Jamaica.
While living in Jamaica, Scott received her bachelor’s degree from the University of the West Indies and later graduated from Norman Manley Law School. She then spent time working at the Fair Trading Commission in Jamaica before immigrating to the United States. Scott went on to complete a J.D. at Mercer University, Walter F. George School of Law.
From a civic standpoint, she is credited with establishing a Clayton County Chapter of Boys to Men and is a recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award from the Rainbow Push Coalition.
Scott originally hails from Mandeville but grew up in Hanover in Jamaica, where she attended Bethel Primary School in Hopewell as well as Montego Bay High School and Manchester High School.
