Judge Jeffrey S. Sunshine - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jeffrey S. Sunshine is a justice for the Kings County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Second Judicial District of New York. Sunshine was elected to the bench in 2011. He was subsequently named Statewide Coordinating Judge for Matrimonial Cases by Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence K. Marks in 2018.

Sunshine began his judicial career as a judge for the Family Court of the City of New York in Kings County. He was appointed to this position by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1998 and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002. He was then designated acting justice for the Richmond County Supreme Court (2001 to 2003) and the Kings County Supreme Court (2003 to 2010) by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman.

He earned a B.A. from Brooklyn College at the City University of New York in 1977. Then, in 1980, he completed a J.D. at Hofstra University, Maurice A. Deane School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Sunshine began his legal career as a principal law clerk for the Hon. Barry Hurowitz of the Kings County Supreme Court. Three years later, he concluded his clerkship and entered into private practice, where he worked until his appointment to the bench.

His committee memberships have included the New York State Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts, the Judicial Hearing Officer Selection Advisory Committee, the Matrimonial Commission, the Committee on Matrimonial Practice, the Task Force on Domestic Violence, the Grievance Committee, and the Best Practice Committee for Matrimonial Judges.

He has also been a member of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the Columbia Lawyers Association of Brooklyn, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Brandeis Society of Brooklyn, and the Catholic Lawyers Association of Brooklyn.

He has served as President of the Brooklyn Bar Association, Chair of the Special Committee on Judicial Discipline of the New York State Bar Association, Co-Chair of the Office of Court Administration Matrimonial Practice Advisory Committee, and Chair of the Chief Administrative Judge’s Matrimonial Practice Advisory and Rules Committee.

His wife, Nancy T. Sunshine, has served as the county clerk of Kings County.
