The Hon. Jean T. Schneider is a judge for the New York City Housing Court in New York County. Schneider was initially appointed to the bench by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 1997 and 2008. She was subsequently re-appointed by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti in 2012 and Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence K. Marks in 2017.
During her tenure on the bench, Schneider was selected to selected to serve as its supervising judge in 2009. Three years later, she was assigned to the New York City Housing Court in Kings County, where she served as supervising judge until 2015. At that time, she became the citywide supervising judge of the New York City Housing Court.
Schneider earned a B.A. from Swarthmore College in 1973. Then, in 1977, she completed a J.D. at Yale Law School.
After graduating from law school, Schneider began her legal career as a staff attorney with the Bedford-Stuyvesant Community Legal Services in 1977. Four years later, she moved to the Legal Aid Society, where she practiced as a staff attorney until 1984. She then joined the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys, District 65-UAW. She served as president for three years before returning to the Legal Aid Society in 1987. She stayed with the Legal Aid Society until her appointment to the bench in 1997.
