Biography

Hon. Jay Knudson is a judge for the Northeast Central Judicial District of North Dakota. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Burgum in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the appointment of the Hon. Jon Jensen to the North Dakota Supreme Court.


The Northeast Central Judicial District includes Grand Forks and Nelson Counties.


Prior to his appointment, Knudson presided as a judicial referee and magistrate judge for the Northeast Central Judicial District (2015 to 2016).


He also spent four years as an attorney with the North Dakota Commission on Legal Counsel for Indigents (2011 to 2015) and was in private practice at Zimney Foster P.C. (2017) and Reichert Armstrong, PC (2005 to 2011). During that time, Knudson gained experience in criminal, civil, domestic relations, juvenile, immigration, and financial matters. In addition, he represented clients in the state courts, federal appeals courts, federal immigration court, and federal bankruptcy court.


Knudson also taught as an adjunct professor at the University of North Dakota School of Law.


He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of North Dakota in 2001. Knudson went on to complete a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2004.


He was raised on a farm near Clifford, North Dakota.
