Judge James T. Derico, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James T. Derico, Jr. is an associate judge with the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois. He was appointed to the Circuit Court by the Cook County circuit judges in September 2021. Previously he was appointed to the Circuit Court bench by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2019 but lost his bid for election to the seat after his term expired in 2020. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Matthew E. Coghlan (Ret.).

Derico attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a B.A. in government in 1982. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1985.

He began his legal career as an associate at Gardner, Carton & Douglas, practicing there for three years. Then, in 1988, Derico became an assistant corporation counsel with the Contracts and Commercial Law Group of the Office of Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago, though his time there would be brief. The following year, he joined the BorgWarner Corporation as in-house corporate counsel and held that position until becoming the owner and founding partner of Derico & Associates, P.C. in 1992.

His memberships included the Chicago Bar Association (where he served as past chair of the Corporate Practices Group) and the Cook County Bar Association. Derico also served on the Illinois Supreme Court’s Committee for Civil Jury Instruction.

He has volunteered his time as a coach for the Chicago Public Schools Moot Court and as a mentor at the Kipling School. In addition, Derico served as a board member of the Legacy Project of Chicago.

The second oldest of thirteen children, he originally hails from Gary, Indiana. From a civic standpoint, Derico was co-founder of the Trinity Legal Clinic and is an active member of his church, Trinity United Church of Christ, where he served as a mentor through the Project Jeremiah Ministry program.

He is registered as a Democrat.
