Biography

The Hon. James K. Singleton (Ret.) is a senior judge on the United States District Court for the District of Alaska. Singleton was nominated to the bench by former President George H. W. Bush on January 24, 1990, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. James Martin Fitzgerald. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 11, 1990. He assumed senior status on January 27, 2005.


Singleton earned an A.B. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1961. He then completed an LL.B. at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, in 1964. He is licensed to practice in Alaska (1965) and California (1965).


After graduating from law school, Singleton began his legal career as an attorney in private practice in Anchorage. He worked in that capacity until 1970, at which time he became a judge for the Alaska Superior Court. Then, in 1980, he was appointed to the Alaska Court of Appeals.


Singleton was born in Oakland, California.
