Biography

The Hon. Jamal N. Whitehead is a judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He was nominated to the bench by President Joe Biden on January 3, 2023, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Richard A. Jones. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 28, 2023.


Prior to his appointment, Whitehead was a shareholder at Schroeter Goldmark & Bender, a law firm he joined in 2016. During his tenure there, he litigated civil cases in state and federal courts, representing clients in personal injury and employment law matters. Before that, he spent time as an assistant United States attorney with the Western District of Washington (2014 to 2016).


Whitehead earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Washington in 2004. He then completed a J.D. at Seattle University School of Law in 2007. He is licensed to practice in Washington (2007).


After graduating from law school, Whitehead entered into private practice at Garvey Schubert Barer in Seattle. He remained with the firm until 2010, at which time he became a trial attorney with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.


His memberships have included the Loren Miller Bar Association, the Washington State Association for Justice, the Washington State Bar Association, the Washington Employment Lawyers Association, and the Federal Bar Association. He has also been involved with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.


Born in Turnersville, New Jersey, Whitehead was raised in the Seattle area.
