Biography

The Hon. Ilana Gruebel is a judge for the Family Court of the City of New York in Kings County. Gruebel was appointed to the Family Court bench by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2010 and reappointed by former Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2020.


Prior to her appointment, Gruebel served as an interim judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York, a position to which Mayor Bloomberg appointed her in 2010. She was promptly designated to an assignment on the Family Court in Kings County.


She received a B.A. from the State University of New York at Binghamton. Gruebel then completed a J.D. at the University at Buffalo School of Law in 1985. She was admitted to practice in New York (1986).


After graduating from law school, Gruebel went on to serve in the Juvenile Rights Division of the New York City Legal Aid Society. She later joined the Nassau County Legal Aid Society, where she held an assignment as bureau chief of the Family Court Division.


Then, in 1991, she was named a court attorney for the Family Court of the City of New York in Kings County. Gruebel continued in that position until 2001, at which time she became a court attorney referee for the court. She worked as a court attorney referee in Kings County for the next eight years before her appointment to the bench.
