The Hon. Hugh S. Campbell is a judge for the 15th Judicial District Court of Virginia. He was elected to the bench by the Virginia General Assembly on July 1, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Peter Trible.
The 15th Judicial District encompasses Fredericksburg and Caroline, Essex, Hanover, King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland Counties.
Prior to his election, Campbell was a partner at Campbell & Campbell, a law firm based in Ashland. His uncle, Leslie, started the practice in the 1950s, becoming one of the first full-time attorneys in the county. Campbell then joined the firm in 1992, where he handled criminal defense and personal injury matters alongside his uncle and his father.
Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Virginia. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Richmond School of Law in 1991.
He was born and raised on a farm in Beaverdam, Virginia, near Patrick Henry’s “Scotchtown” in western Hanover County. He attended Hanover Academy, Liberty Middle School, and Patrick Henry High School.
