Biography

Hon. Howard Sukenic is a judge for the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey in 2015.


During his judicial tenure, Sukenic has held an assignment in the Family Court.


Prior to joining the bench, he had served as an Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona since 2002. During his tenure there, Sukenic held an assignment in the Criminal Trial Division, serving as the deputy chief (2005 to 2008) and section chief (2009 to 2012).


Before joining the Department of Justice, the bulk of his legal career was spent with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Sukenic first joined the office as a deputy county attorney in 1988 and worked there for ten years before leaving for a brief stint in private practice as a litigation associate at Bonn, Luscher, Padden & Wilkins, Chtd. (1998 to 1999).


He returned to the County Attorney’s Office in 1999 and remained there until 2002. During his tenure there, Sukenic held assignments in the Criminal Trial Division (1988 to 1990), Controlled Substance Division (1990 to 1991), Special Crimes Division of the Organized Crime Bureau (1991 to 1995), Special Crimes Division of the Gang/Repeat Offender Bureau (1995 to 1996), Major Crimes Division (1999 to 2001), and Juvenile Division (2001 to 2002). He also served as Bureau Chief of the Juvenile Division (1996 to 1997) and Southeast Division Pretrial Bureau (1997 to 1998).


Sukenic received a B.S. in psychology from Arizona State University in 1984. He went on to complete a J.D. at Pepperdine University, Rick J. Caruso School of Law in 1987.
