The Hon. Howard A. Kalfus is a judge for the Vermont Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Phil Scott on June 2, 2021, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. William D. Cohen to the Vermont Supreme Court.
Over the course of his judicial career, Kalfus has presided over family cases in Bennington County.
Prior to his appointment, Kalfus was a hearing officer for the Vermont Judicial Bureau, a position to which he was named in 2011. Before that, he was a staff attorney for the Chittenden County Public Defender’s Office as well as an assistant attorney general for the Vermont Department for Children & Families.
Kalfus earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He then completed a J.D. at Seton Hall University School of Law and a master’s degree in judicial studies from the University of Nevada, Reno.
After graduating from law school, Kalfus entered into private practice. He worked as an associate at Downs Rachlin Martin, eventually leaving the firm to become a staff attorney for the Vermont Department of Public Safety.
