Hon. Herbert W. Benson is a judge for the Tift County State Court in Georgia. He was elected to the bench in 2014.
During his tenure on the State Court, Benson has presided over the Tift County DUI/Drug Court since its inception in January 2017.
He also presided for twenty-two years as a municipal judge for the City of Tifton in addition to serving as a municipal judge for the Cities of Omega, Ashburn, Sycamore, and Adel.
Apart from his judicial positions, Benson had worked as a private practice attorney since 1987. During that time, he was a sole practitioner in his own private practice and a partner in the Tifton law firm of Sims, Fleming & Benson (2000 to 2009). His areas of practice included criminal defense, civil litigation, family law, probate, and estate matters.
Benson received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia in 1978. After graduating from university, he worked as a city editor and sports editor at the Tifton Gazette before completing a J.D. at Georgia State University College of Law in 1986.
He is a member of the Tifton Circuit Bar Association.
Benson is a lifelong resident of Tift County and a graduate of Tift County High School (1974). He has two sons.
