Biography

The Hon. Halbert O. Woodward (deceased) is a former judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He was nominated to the bench by former President Lyndon Johnson on April 25, 1968, filling the vacancy created by the Hon. Joe B. Dooley. The United States Senate confirmed his nomination on June 6, 1968. Woodward assumed senior status on December 30, 1986, and continued in this manner until his passing on October 2, 2000.


Prior to his nomination, he worked in private practice in Coleman since 1949. Before that, he worked for the Humble Oil and Refining Company as a title examiner (1941 to 1942) and as a land and title supervisor (1945 to 1949). His time there was punctuated with his military service. Woodward served for three years as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy (1942 to 1945).


Woodward received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas. He then completed an LL.B. at the University of Texas School of Law in 1940.


After graduating from law school, Woodward began his legal career as a hearing examiner for the Texas Employment Commission, where he worked for one year before joining the Humble Oil and Refining Company in 1941.


He served as chairman of the Texas Highway Commission and as a member of the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.


Woodward was born in Coleman, Texas, in 1918.
