The Hon. H. Arthur McLane (Ret.) is a senior judge for the Southern Judicial Circuit Superior Court in Georgia. McLane was appointed to the bench by former Governor Joe Frank Harris in 1983. He retired on December 31, 2008.
Prior to his appointment, McLane sat as a judge for the Lowndes County State Court, a position to which he was named in 1974. Before that, he was an attorney in private practice.
McLane earned a bachelor’s degree from Emory University in 1961. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Georgia School of Law in 1964. He was admitted to practice in Georgia and the United States Supreme Court (1972).
His memberships have included the Valdosta Bar Association, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, the Valdosta Rotary Club, and the Council of Superior Court Judges of Georgia. He also sits on the board of the Valdosta Symphony and the Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch.
He is a recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Alapaha Council of the Boy Scouts of America (2002).
McLane was raised in Valdosta, Georgia, where he attended Valdosta High School. He and his wife, Jane, have two children. They attend Park Avenue Methodist Church. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and reading.
