Biography

The Hon. Gregory J. Fouratt is a magistrate for the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. He was appointed to the bench by the judges of the District of New Mexico on February 22, 2016.


Prior to joining the bench, Fouratt was cabinet secretary of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, following his appointment to the position in 2014. As such, he headed the department tasked with overseeing the state’s police force and law enforcement academy.


Before that, Fouratt spent seventeen years as a federal prosecutor for the District of New Mexico, gaining expertise in racketeering, capital murder, and gang-related crimes. During his tenure there, he served for two years as the United States attorney for the District of New Mexico, following his appointment to the post in 2008.


Fouratt received a bachelor’s degree in government from New Mexico State University (1988) and a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University (1991). He then completed a J.D. at Texas Tech University School of Law in 1995, graduating first in his class.


He was admitted to practice in Texas (1995) and New Mexico (1997).


Fouratt served for six years as an officer in the United States Air Force before transitioning his service into the Air Force Reserve, followed by the New Mexico Air National Guard. Fouratt retired from military service as a lieutenant colonel in 2012.


He was raised in Roswell, New Mexico, where he attended Roswell High School.
