Judge Gordon M. Hemmett: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Gordon M. Hemmett (deceased) served as a judge on the Washington County Court Multi-Bench in the 4th Judicial District of New York.


Hemmett played an instrumental role in establishing a drug court program for Washington County.


Prior to his appointment, Hemmett was the district attorney for Washington County. Before that, he served as an assistant district attorney with the Washington County District Attorney's Office as well as an assistant public defender with the Washington County Public Defender's Office.


Hemmett earned a bachelor's degree from Allegheny College. He then completed a J.D. at Syracuse University College of Law in 1965.


After graduating from law school, Hemmett began his legal career as an attorney in private practice at McPhillips, Fitzgerald & Cullum and Pontiff, Stewart & Rhodes in Glens Falls. He later became general counsel for Glens Falls Insurance Co. before opening his own private practice in Hudson Falls.


His memberships included the Washington County Bar Association and the Pilot Knob Association. He was also involved with the Hudson Falls Rotary, the Glens Falls Country Club, and the Hudson Falls Chamber of Commerce, and he served on the board of directors of the Crandall Library.


Born in Rochester, New York, Hemmett graduated from Brighton High School. He was a resident of Pilot Knob, New York, where he and his wife, Monica, raised six children. The family attended First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he enjoyed hunting, boating, golfing, and photography.


He passed away on February 23, 2004.
