Judge Gilbert A. Taylor: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Gilbert A. Taylor is a judge of the Family Court of the City of New York in Kings County. Taylor was appointed to the Family Court bench by former Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2016 and reappointed by Mayor Eric Adams in 2022.


He was designated as supervising judge of the Kings County Family Court by Chief Administrative Judge Joseph Zayas in 2025. Taylor also held assignments on the Bronx County Family Court (2016 to 2020) and as supervising judge of the Queens County Family Court (2020 to 2024).


Prior to his appointment to the bench, Taylor was commissioner of the New York City Department of Homeless Services, a position to which he was named in 2014. His legal career also included stints as executive deputy commissioner of child protection (2011 to 2014) and deputy commissioner with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services.


Taylor also served as attorney-in-charge of the Law Guardian Program of the Children’s Rights Society of the Orange County Family Court and was an associate at a New York City law firm.


He earned a B.S. from Cornell University. Taylor then completed a J.D. at the University of Illinois College of Law in 1994. He was admitted to practice in New York (1995), New Jersey (1994), and the District of Columbia (1996).


Taylor has taught as an adjunct professor at York College of the City University of New York.


His memberships have included the National Bar Association, the Association of Family Court Judges of the State of New York, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.


Taylor was raised in Queens, New York, and has resided in Harlem.
