The Hon. Gerald J. Pappert is a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He was nominated to the bench by former President Barack Obama on June 16, 2014, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Stewart R. Dalzell. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 3, 2014.
Prior to his appointment, Pappert was a partner at Cozen O'Conner, a law firm he joined in 2012. Before that, he spent time as a partner at Ballard Spahr (2005 to 2008) as well as the executive vice president and general counsel of a biopharmaceutical company, Cephalon, Inc. (2008 to 2012).
Pappert earned a B.A. from Villanova University in 1985. He then completed a J.D. at Notre Dame Law School in 1988. He is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania (1988) and New York (1995).
After graduating from law school, Pappert entered into private practice at Duane Morris LLP. He remained with the firm for nine years, eventually leaving to become the first deputy attorney general for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Then, in 2003, he was named Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
His memberships have included the Pennsylvania Banking and Securities Commission and the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
He was born in Albany, New York. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he enjoys exercising, playing golf, spending time with family, and reading about sports and history. He also closely follows the Boston Red Sox, the University of Notre Dame football team, and the Villanova University basketball team.
