The Hon. Geoffrey G. Hengerer is an associate judge for the Baltimore City District Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Larry Hogan on July 2, 2018.
Prior to his appointment, Hengerer was corporate counsel for Keller Foundations, providing legal advice and support to the global geotechnical engineering and construction company. Before that, he spent time as deputy legal counsel to the Maryland Office of the Governor (2015 to 2017) as well as a military judge (2020) and a regional judge advocate (2015 to 2017) for the United States Marine Forces Reserve.
Hengerer earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Amherst College in 1999. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2002. As a law student, Hengerer was the managing editor of the University of Baltimore Law Review.
He is admitted to practice in Maryland (2002), the District of Columbia (2005), the United States District Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces (2006), the United States District Court for the District of Columbia (2008), the United States District Court for the District of Maryland (2009), the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (2010), the United States Supreme Court (2010), and the United States Court of Appeals for Veteran Claims (2013).
After graduating from law school, Hengerer began his legal career as defense counsel for the United States Marine Corps. During his tenure there, he rose through the ranks, quickly becoming Deputy Staff Judge Advocate for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq (2005 to 2006) and the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, North Carolina (2006 to 2007).
Then, in 2007, Hengerer entered into private practice. He started as an associate at Steptoe & Johnson, advising clients in civil and white collar criminal matters involving the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and the Noerr-Pennington Doctrine. He also represented oil pipeline owners in regulatory hearings. He then moved to Silverman Thompson Slutkin White in 2013. During his tenure there, he represented clients in complex civil litigation, business disputes, administrative matters, government investigations, and victims’ rights advocacy.
His memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, and the Baltimore City Bar Association.
Hengerer was born in Washington, D.C. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he coaches Kelly Post Girls Lacrosse.
