The Hon. Gene Lopez is a judge for the Criminal Court of the City of New York in Queens County. He was initially appointed to the bench by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002 and 2009. He was then re-appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2019.
Lopez earned a bachelor’s degree from American University. He then completed a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Lopez served as the Executive Director of the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board, where he was tasked with investigating civilian complaints against members of the New York City Police Department. Before that, he served in the Office of the District Attorney of Kings County, the Department of Sanitation of the City of New York, the New York City Transit Authority, and the New York City Housing Authority.
