Biography

The Hon. Eric J. Braaten is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Minnesota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mark Dayton on October 30, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Richard C. Perkins.


The First Judicial District includes Carver County, Dakota County, Goodhue County, Le Sueur County, Scott County, and Sibley County.


Prior to his appointment, Braaten was an attorney at Braaten & Braaten. Before that, he practiced at Nicklaus Braaten & Hollenhorst as well as Katz & Manka. Over the course of his legal career, Braaten specialized in family law matters, including dissolutions, adoptions, paternity, custody, and various post-dissolution enforcement issues.


Braaten earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College. He then completed a J.D. at Marquette University Law School.


His memberships have included the Carver County Low Fee Family Law Panel.
