Biography

The Hon. Eric C. Johnson is a judge for the 2nd Judicial Circuit Court of South Dakota. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Kristi Noem in 2024.


The 2nd Judicial Circuit includes Lincoln and Minnehaha counties. Prior to his appointment, Johnson was a magistrate for the 2nd Judicial Circuit since 2016, where he also presided over the Circuit’s Veterans Treatment Court.


Before joining the bench, he worked for almost nine years as a deputy state’s attorney with the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney's Office (2007 to 2016).


Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in English and business administration from Augustana University in 1996. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Nebraska College of Law in 2003.


Johnson began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Everett O. Inbody with the Nebraska Court of Appeals (2003 to 2007), where he remained until becoming a prosecutor.


He is a native of Vermillion, South Dakota. Johnson and his wife, Nicole, have two children.
