Hon. Ellen L. Maas is a judge for the 10th Judicial District Court of Minnesota in Washington County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arne Carlson on January 13, 1995.
The 10th Judicial District includes Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright Counties.
Prior to her appointment, Maas was a partner at Popham, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman (1988 to 1995) and Arthur, Chapman & Michaelson (1982 to 1988).
She received a B.A. from Drake University in 1978. Maas went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Iowa College of Law in 1981.
After graduating from law school, she began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Glenn E. Kelley with the Minnesota Supreme Court (1981 to 1982) and also served a clerkship with the Hon. Robert Schiefelbein with the 4th Judicial District Court (1982).
Maas has held memberships with the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Hennepin County Bar Association, and the Warren E. Burger American Inn of Court (Executive Committee).
She also served as a member of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on General Rules of Practice, the Uniform Local Rules Task Force, the Judicial Merit Advisory Commission, and the White Bear Lake Conservation District Commission.
Maas received the Trial Judge of the Year Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates in 2011.
She has played the bassoon with the Kenwood Chamber Orchestra since 1985.
