Biography

The Hon. Efren N. Iglesia (Ret.) served as a judge for the Monterey County Superior Court in California. Iglesia was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007. He retired in 2020.


During his tenure on the bench, Iglesia presided in the Misdemeanor Trial Department.


Iglesia received a B.A. from Fresno Pacific University. He went on to earn a J.D. from San Joaquin College of Law in 1976.


He began his legal career in private practice, joining the firm Gendron and Gendron, where he practiced criminal defense for three years. Then, in 1979, Iglesia joined the Imperial County Counsel's Office, where he worked as an assistant county counsel until 1983. He then worked for the Monterey County Counsel's Office, where he would be named a senior deputy county counsel. During his tenure there, he handled complex land use and environmental law cases.


His memberships have included the Board of Trustees for the Monterey College of Law.


Iglesia was born in Camalig, Albay, in the Philippines. After briefly attending college there, he immigrated to the United States in 1971, escaping the impending martial law that was declared in the Philippines a short time later. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and playing the guitar.


He is registered as a Republican.
